Sant Roc Hotel opened its doors on a rainy night in June 1955, but the hotel’s story begins two years earlier, when Joan Boix and his wife Neus, acquired a small piece of land on a hill in the south of Calella, with the intention of building a summer house for their family.
At that time, Costa Brava was still a hidden treasure and the tourists were just starting to arrive. S’Agaró and Aiguablava were the preferred destinations for those first tourists, who belonged to the commonly known “class tourism”.
Apart from the hotel, they also built a pier; they levelled the rocks to turn it into a solarium, sunshades included, and they put a 112 step staircase for a direct access from the hotel. All together they created a wonderful scene in a harmonious setting.
French tourists flocked, Catalans and a few lost British started to appear, and everyone who discovered this part of the Costa Brava fell in love with it and would definitely come back again. Among these pioneers there were dignitaries from Barcelona and the French society. Nowadays, some of those early customers still visit us regularly, which fills us with satisfaction.
Customers used to stay for three months; they were large families with their own staff that turned the hotel in their home for a few months.
Joan Boix wanted the hotel to be a place to rest, but also an establishment where fun and leisure time were indispensable. Sant Roc Fridays were unmissable among Costa Brava’s nights; a scene that during the sixties had distinguished characters like “el Gitano de la Costa Brava” or Tomàs Cervera from Chez Tomas. A platform raised the orchestra, piano included, above the guests, and artists like Carmen Amaya, la Chunga or José de la Vega would leave the tourists open-mouthed.
By the end of the eighties, the hotel business was under changing: customers began to shorten their stays and to require more services, so a change was necessary. The hotel aimed to continue offering a quality service and to improve its infrastructure.
Today, the third generation is in charge of the hotel, and they still follow grandfather Joan’s service spirit. A new generation, bringing with it enthusiasm and thrills.
